Lines one and three uses the words, ââ¬Å"sunâ⬠and ââ¬Å"dunâ⬠, lines two and four make use of ââ¬Å"redâ⬠and ââ¬Å"headâ⬠, lines five and seven ââ¬Å"whiteâ⬠and ââ¬Å"delightâ⬠, lines six and eight ââ¬Å"cheeksâ⬠and ââ¬Å"reeksâ⬠, lines nine and eleven ââ¬Å"knowâ⬠and ââ¬Å"goâ⬠, lines ten and twelve ââ¬Å"soundâ⬠and ââ¬Å"groundâ⬠, and lines thirteen and fourteen ââ¬Å"rareâ⬠and ââ¬Å"compareâ⬠. The sentences used by Shakespeare are not choppy and the sentence structures are smooth flowing. Flowery language is not employed; in fact, it is contrary to the usual conventions of love poetry. Mullenââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Dim Ladyâ⬠on the other hand, does not have a rhyme scheme. There is no meter and verse l ineation unlike ââ¬Å"Sonnet 130â⬠The level of diction used by Mullen is slang in a way and more contemporary. She used the words ââ¬Å"peepersâ⬠to mean eyes, ââ¬Å"nogginâ⬠to mean head and ââ¬Å"mugâ⬠to mean face. She also used commercial brands to compare the physical characteristics of the woman. Brands such as Shakeyââ¬â¢s, Slinky, Liquid Paper, Muzak, Twinkie and Red Lobster were used. Several similes and metaphors are used in both poems.
